چکیده

Life history of immature Angoumois grain moths, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), was studied on dent corn (Pioneer 3320) at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 C and at 43, 53Ð61, 75Ð76, and 82Ð87% RH under laboratory conditions. At 10 and 40 C, none of the stages survived at any relative humidity. Temperaturewas themain factor affecting egg incubationperiod, larval-pupal development time, and egg and larval-pupal survivorship. The shortest egg development times occurred at temperatures of 30 C and higher, but they increased sharply as temperature decreased. Larval-pupal development timewas shortest at 30 C.Survivorshipwasoptimal at 20Ð30 Cforeggs and larvae-pupae, but larval-pupal survivorship decreased sharply at 15 and 35 C. Duration of larval-pupal development did not vary with sex. Newly emerged females were twofold heavier thanmales, and temperature and relative humidity did not affect weight. Sex ratio of emerging adults did not differ from 1:1 at any temperature or relative humidity. The optimumconditions for development of Angoumois grainmoth on corn were 30 C and 75% RH. The data will be useful for determining safe storage conditions for corn and for developing a computer model for simulating population dynamics of immature S. cerealella.

Ionizing irradiation of adults of Angoumois grain moth (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) and Indianmeal moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) to prevent reproduction, and implications for a generic irradiation treatment for insects.

Ionizing irradiation is used as a phytosanitary treatment against quarantine pests. A generic treatment of 400 Gy has been approved for commodities entering the United States against all insects except pupae and adults of Lepidoptera because some literature citations indicate that a few insects, namely, the Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), and the...

Ultrastructure of sensilla of antennae and ovipositor of Sitotroga cerealella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), and location of female sex pheromone gland

The Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella, is a serious pest of stored grains worldwide. Presently, the best effective control against the moth is to disrupt the sexual communication between sexes. Sexual communication in moths includes two processes in which females produce and release pheromones from the sex pheromone gland and males detect and respond to them with a relatively sophistic...

POPULATION ECOLOGY Computer Model for Simulating Almond Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Population Dynamics

We developed a computer model for simulating the population dynamics of the almond moth, Cadra cautella (Walker). The model incorporates previously published life history data for the almondmothdeveloping on storedpeanuts, Arachis hypogaeaL., including stage-speciÞc immature developmental time and survival and adult longevity and fecundity. The model was modiÞed so that it also could be used to...

POPULATION ECOLOGY Computer Model for Simulating Population Dynamics of the Predator Lyctocoris campestris (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) in Stored Shelled Corn

A computer model for simulating population dynamics of Lyctocoris campestris (F.), a predator of stored-product insects, was developed using data from the literature and newly collected data for adult longevity and fecundity. Immature development time and survival, adult longevity, fecundity, and cannibalism were simulated. The model was validated at ambient environmental conditions during thre...

In Vitro and In Vivo Effects of α-Amylase Inhibitor From Avena sativa Seeds on Life History and Physiological Characteristics of Sitotroga cerealella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)

The inhibitory effects of Avena sativa L. seed extract were studied on life history and some physiological aspects of Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier; Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). The inhibition of α-amylase activity in vitro by A. sativa proteinaceous extract suggested its potential antimetabolic effect on S. cerealella larvae. Although, chronic ingestion of A. sativa inhibitor (I10: 0.108 mg prot...
